How advanced is China's brain–computer interface technology?
China has moved BCI from laboratory work into multi-centre clinical trials. NEUCYBER's semi-invasive BeiNao-1 system had been implanted in more than 40 patients as of August 2026, with the longest-running device past 18 months. It uses 128 channels on a flexible film electrode placed on the outer surface of the dura, so it does not penetrate brain tissue, and reports decoding latency under 100 milliseconds. A formal registration trial began on 31 March 2026 at Beijing Tiantan Hospital and Xuanwu Hospital, with a device registration filing targeted for early 2027. A separate 512-channel invasive system, BeiNao-2, is in large-animal testing.
Is China leading in humanoid robots?
China leads in humanoid manufacturing volume, not necessarily in autonomy software. Unitree Robotics reported cumulative production of more than 18,000 bipedal humanoids by August 2026, having shipped over 5,500 units in 2025 — the largest figure globally. Rival AgiBot has reported roughly 15,000 cumulative units. Most customers today are universities, research institutes and exhibition venues; industrial deployment remains at pilot scale, and autonomy software is still less mature than the hardware.
Why are companies outside China using Chinese AI models?
Three reasons: capability, cost and licensing. The performance gap between top Chinese and American models narrowed to about 2.7% on the Code Arena leaderboard as of March 2026 according to Stanford's AI Index. On pricing, Chinese open models have been available around $0.18 per million output tokens against roughly $30 for a leading US frontier model. And permissive open licences let companies self-host without exposure to export controls.
How widely are Chinese open-source models actually used?
On OpenRouter, the share of tokens US companies consumed on Chinese models has been above 30% every week since 8 February 2026 and has peaked at 46% — against a 12-month average of 11% and 4.5% in the first half of 2025. Chinese open models accounted for 41% of global large-model downloads over the past year, and Alibaba's Qwen passed 1 billion cumulative Hugging Face downloads in January 2026, later representing over half of global open-source model downloads.
Does China have its own AI chips?
Yes, and the supply base has broadened. Huawei's Ascend shipped roughly 812,000 accelerators in 2025, about 49% of China's domestic market. Alibaba's T-Head shipped around 265,000; Baidu Kunlun and Cambricon roughly 116,000 each; Hygon about 82,500. China's domestic share of AI accelerators has risen from roughly 95% NVIDIA before export controls to about 41%. The binding constraints are now wafer fabrication, HBM memory and advanced packaging rather than chip design.
What is a supernode and why does China use them?
A supernode tightly couples hundreds or thousands of accelerators so they behave like a single machine. It is China's structural answer to restricted access to the most advanced individual chips: if a single chip cannot be made larger, make the system better. Huawei's Ascend 384 supernode integrates 384 Ascend 910C accelerators for roughly 300 PFLOPS of BF16 dense compute, with vendor figures placing it near 2x an NVIDIA GB200 NVL72. More than 500 sets had been deployed nationwide by mid-2026.
What is China's 'AI Plus' initiative?
AI Plus is China's national programme for wiring AI into the real economy, set out in State Council Opinions published 18 March 2026. Its headline targets are adoption of next-generation smart terminals and agents above 70% by 2027 and above 90% by 2030, with China fully entering an intelligent economy and society by 2035. It organises work into six special actions — science and technology, industry, consumption, public wellbeing, governance, and international cooperation — and is implemented through ministry-level plans covering manufacturing, telecoms, consumption, robotics and datasets.
What is the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO)?
WAICO is a multilateral AI cooperation body agreed in July 2026 at the World AI Conference in Shanghai, signed by representatives of 29 countries, with its headquarters in Shanghai. It was announced alongside an action plan on AI cooperation and development covering eight areas — data, computing power, ecosystems, industrial empowerment, talent, rules and standards, governance, and AI ethics — and a pledge of 5,000 AI training and seminar slots for developing countries over five years, with cooperation centres linked to ASEAN, the African Union and BRICS.
How large is China's AI user base?
China reported about 1.125 billion internet users and 602 million generative AI users by the end of 2025. Daily token consumption across the country has been reported above 140 trillion. The country has more than 6,000 AI companies, with an industrial chain spanning chips, compute clusters, model development and application deployment.
Is China's AI sector profitable?
It depends on the layer. Hardware and manufacturing are profitable: Unitree turned a 2023 loss into 288 million yuan of net profit on 1.708 billion yuan of revenue in 2025, and Cambricon's first-half 2026 net profit rose 123% to 2.311 billion yuan. Applied AI and media tools are growing fast but still loss-making at the frontier — Kling AI was reported to have lost about 1.9 billion yuan in 2025 on roughly 1.1 billion of revenue. Deep technology such as brain–computer interfaces and frontier model development remains loss-making by design, with payoffs a decade out.
How does China govern AI and neurotechnology?
Through layered, sector-specific instruments rather than a single statute. Ethics guidance is issued by expert committees before a technology diffuses — for example the Ethical Guidelines for Brain–Computer Interface Research, which distinguish restorative from enhancement applications. Regulators then publish classification rules, followed by technical standards that embed requirements such as informed consent, liability allocation and protection of vulnerable groups. Payment and procurement close the loop: several provinces have brought BCI services into insurance reimbursement.
